If you’re following Jesus, you’re a disciple.  You must engage in the process of discipleship personally first before you can hope to encourage other people. Here are some of my favorite books that have encouraged my personal discipleship over the years.  They are also great to read with others:

Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth by Richard Foster.

Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist by John Piper.  A full development of Piper’s thesis: God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.

Don’t Waste Your Life John Piper.  A great read summarizing the core of Piper’s passion in an accessible way.  “God created us to live with a single passion: to joyfully display his supreme excellence in all the spheres of life. The wasted life is the life without this passion. God calls us to pray and think and dream and plan and work not to be made much of, but to make much of him in every part of our lives.”

Engaging God’s World: A Christian Vision of Faith, Learning, and Living by Cornelius Plantinga.

The Gospel for Real Life by Jerry Bridges.  Bridges walks his readers step by step through the different aspects of the gospel with lots of practical application.

Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Faith in Communityby Dietrich Bonhoeffer.  This is written by the famous German theologian who was executed by the Nazis.  This is one of the foundational classics to understanding and living out true Christian community.

Living Your Strengths: Discover Your God-Given Talents and Inspire Your Community by Albert L. Winseman, Donald O. Clifton, and Curt Liesveld.  This is the most popular book we pass out at our church.  It is very helpful for understanding your unique and divine design.

A Praying Life: Connecting With God in a Distracting

The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith by Tim Keller.  A creative expositional explanation on the story of the prodigal sons (plural) and their father from Luke 15.

The Transforming Power of the Gospelby Jerry Bridges.  A wonderfully simple read on how we are sanctified by the gospel.

Holiness Day by Day: Transformational Thoughts for Your Spiritual Journey by Jerry Bridges

Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence by Sarah Young

Keep a Quiet Heart by Elisabeth Elliot
